Alejandro Chilisná Botón is a trained community health facilitator and advocate for integrated care of women and children in the community. He is also a councilman in the Guatemalan municipality of Cunén, Quiché, where he works on budget approval and helps decide government community development priorities. Chilisná works to ensure that nutrition interventions are a priority for his region: “a community cannot escape poverty if its residents are not well-nourished. That is the basis for the proper development of human beings.”

As a result of training delivered through USAID projects, Alejandro Chilisná Botón, a municipality councilman in Guatemala, is a strong advocate for maternal and child nutrition in his community.

Chilisná was trained as part of USAID-funded nutrition interventions that have been implemented in Guatemala since 2000, through the Calidad en Salud, Health Care Improvement, and Nutri-Salud projects implemented by University Research Co., LLC (URC). These programs address an urgent need: half of Guatemalan children under 5 years of age are chronically malnourished, creating life-long consequences for their health, education and productivity. USAID has been working with the Ministry of Health to establish sustainable improvements in health and nutrition service delivery, and conducting training on nutrition-related behaviors has been a cornerstone of the program. USAID support has enabled the training of 16,000 healthcare workers and child caregivers to promote positive behaviors and improve nutrition.

Through USAID-funded interventions in Guatemala, a health promoter councils a mother on child health and nutrition.

Now, in collaboration with the new USAID Nutri-Salud project, Chilisná is advocating to implement the seven essential nutrition actions (ENA) in local health facilities. The ENAs are an integrated package of cost-effective actions proven to reduce maternal and child malnutrition and associated death and diseases by focusing on the 1,000 day “window of opportunity” (i.e., during pregnancy and the first two years of a child’s life, when ENA can prevent malnutrition). He explains, “We want to achieve changes in the knowledge and feeding practices of women…[by educating them] in their native language so that the message is right.”

Forecasts indicate world food production must grow at least fifty per cent by 2050, to feed a population of nine billion people. Can this be done in a way that eradicates hunger and preserves the environment?

The second in Oxfam’s online discussion series will tackle this very question from Monday, December 10 to Friday December 21, at http://blogs.oxfam.org/future-of-agriculture .

Two new essays will be posted daily, and every day will feature YOU, responding to the experts’ ideas and sharing your own. All essays and comments will inform an Oxfam discussion paper to be published in 2013.

To conclude the discussion, Indian sustainable development expert Sonali Bisht and U.S. author Roger Thurow will provide overall analyses and draw out key recommendations.

Despite the economic and scientific evidence supporting the importance of good nutrition early in life, nutrition programs and policies remain critically under-recognized and under-funded. This makes malnutrition more than just a health or development problem – it is a political one – which is why 1,000 Days is working with our partners to move nutrition to the top of the global development agenda.
